Tsunemasa Saito, professor emeritus of Tohoku University, has participated in three cruises of D/V Glomar Challenger toward the purpose of establishing ages of deep-sea sediments by means of planktonic foraminifers. He served as editor of journal Micropaleontology and Catalogue of Planktonic Foraminifera. He is past president of the Palaeontological Society of Japan and a member of the Science Council of Japan.
